BASIC welcomes launch of Top Level Group
BASIC Press Release
Thursday, 29 October 2009 - IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BASIC warmly welcomes the launch of the Top
Level Group of UK parliamentarians for multilateral nuclear
disarmament and non-proliferation.
The TLG "represents an exciting evolution
in the political discussion on these issues in UK," said
BASIC Executive Director Paul Ingram.
He noted that Britain had now abandoned the
strictly polarised debate of the past in recognition of the
critical importance of worldwide nuclear disarmament for everyone's
security, including the nuclear weapon states like the UK.
The existence of the TLG was first publicly
announced by its convener, Des Browne, during a trip to Washington
to discuss nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament with
Senators and Administration officials, facilitated by BASIC.
BASIC will be working closely with the group
to ensure the urgency of the issue in the run-up to the NPT
Review Conference in May next year is not lost within the
election campaign.
