What information BASIC collects We collect only information that you give us via email, telephone or mail. We gather some information when you make a donation or sign up to receive email updates: the only information we require is your name, address, phone, email (and payment method if donating). We may request further information such as your area(s) of interest so we can provide you with a more personalised service. When you log onto the BASIC website, your login details may be stored on a ' cookie'. This is a tiny element of data that our site can send to your browser, which may then be stored on your hard drive. Our web site uses cookies to customise certain options and to gather statistical information about visits (using Google Analytics), but they contain NO private information stored on your computer. If you disable cookies in your web browser, some of the site's functionality may be lost.

How BASIC uses your information BASIC uses your information only to send you communications that may be of interest to you (via email or otherwise) if you have already opted-in to receive information from us. If you have opted in to get email from us, we will send regular updates from our analysts. Some communications are required by law (ie, written confirmation of direct debits), and if you make a donation, we will also post you information about BASIC.

Does BASIC share your information? No. We will not disclose any personally identifiable information except under special circumstances, such as when we believe in good faith that the law requires it.

How can you access, correct or delete your data? We will give you details of all the personal information we hold immediately. Incorrect information will be deleted or amended, and we will give you written confirmation of corrections and deletions. Please contact us by email, fax or letter, after which we will take further steps to confirm your identity before releasing data. We will respond to these requests within 10 working days, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

How can you opt out of receiving messages from BASIC? We will only send you unsolicited emails if you have given us permission to contact you about other areas of our work. We do not send out spam. If we send you an unsolicited email, it will enable you to opt out of receiving further emails from us. If you do not wish to receive further messages from us, please email rstaley[at] asking to be removed from our database.

What are your rights under the Data Protection Act? The collection and use of personal information on this site is in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998 (UK). The DPA applies to all data held within the European Economic Area (EEA). [Please get your lawyer to check this: the UK DPA is stricter than data protection in the US, so it would make most sense to standardise under the stricter regime.]
