Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank


General the Lord Charles Guthrie of Craigiebank, GCB, LVO, OBE, DL joined the Welsh Guards in 1959 and served with them and the SAS. Apart from holding a number of senior staff appointments in the army he was Chief of the Defence Staff of the United Kingdom between 1997 and 2001. He also served as Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, between 1994 and 1997. He was for ten years Colonel Commandant of the Intelligence Corps and is currently Colonel of the Life Guards, Gold Stick to the Queen and Colonel Commandant of the SAS. He is a cross bench peer in the House of Lords, raised to the peerage as Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank, of Craigiebank in the City of Dundee in 2001.
