From 1997 until the dissolution of Parliament in 2010, Des Browne was the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun. In May 2005, after being re-elected as MP, he was promoted to the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. From May 2006 o October 2008 he was the Secretary of State for Defence and between 2007 and October 2008 he jointly held the posts of Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for Scotland. Latterly, Des also served on the first Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. From October 2009 to present he has been Convenor of the Top Level Group of Parliamentarians for Multi-Lateral Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, a group of senior Members of Parliament of all parties who have held senior Government positions or other equivalent roles in the Military or Parliament in foreign and defence policy areas.
