Wednesday, March 21, 2012 (All day) to Thursday, March 22, 2012 (All day)

From March 21-22, 2012: BASIC organized a two-day conference at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, in association with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Almost 50 distinguished U.S. and European experts, as well as analysts, diplomats and officials from the region, attended the event, which is aimed at raising the profile of the Gulf states in non-proliferation efforts. The conference covered a broad range of issues, including: ways to reinforce the NPT and the 2010 Action Plan; Iranian nuclear program and a WMD-free zone in the Middle East; and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

BASIC 2011 Annual Activities Report

There was overwhelming momentum seen in 2010 on the international stage with numerous initiatives on arms control, nuclear non-proliferation, and disarmament. Unfortunately, this momentum was not as evident in 2011, as it seemed as though the international focus had shifted. Nevertheless, BASIC’s tempo was itself maintained into 2011 as we attempted to play our role in returning the focus to effective efforts to achieve nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament in the United Kingdom, United States, Middle East, and Europe.

Getting to Zero Update

BASIC recently wrapped up a series of events in Cairo, including a joint press workshop with the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and an off-the-record seminar on the politics of regional nuclear proliferation.  BASIC staff met with senior officials and former officials to discuss the status of the 2012 conference on a WMD-Free Zone, as a piece in the complex jigsaw of regional politics currently unfolding.
