UK’s nuclear submarines vulnerable to ‘catastrophic’ cyber attack sparking nuclear conflict, warn experts

Following its publication, the Independent reported on the findings of BASIC’s cyber security report, Hacking UK Trident. The article placed the report in its political context, noting the contentious debates surrounding the renewal of the UK’s nuclear deterrent. They noted the oppositional reaction the report received from the Ministry of Defence, who described it as “false and complacent”, as well as the Defence Secretary’s refusal to deny that Trident is operated by Windows XP, the same software recently hacked in the NHS cyber attack.

“Experts have previously warned that Britain’s nuclear power stations are also vulnerable to a cyber-attack that could lead to the “nightmare scenario” of radioactive material being released or electricity grids shut down.”
