INTERNSHIP
PROGRAM
WASHINGTON
Job Description
BASIC's Washington office supervises two unpaid interns
each semester. Through their work, interns gain an understanding
of many of the current issues affecting European security;
familiarity with the arms control community in Washington,
D.C. and various employment opportunities in the field; a
first-hand view of how a small think tank influences international
media coverage; and exposure to the challenges and responsibilities
of international networking.
Interns will have the opportunity to participate in these
projects in various ways, such as helping to research a fact
sheet or report, assisting in the organization of a speaking
tour, or preparing monthly informational mailings for American
and European readers. Interns will assume various programmatic
and administrative duties associated with the organization's
activities. Interns are also expected to perform work of a
general nature: attending congressional hearings and briefings,
monitoring arms control legislation, attending meetings, such
as those of the Nuclear Weapons Working Group (NWWG), monitoring
newspapers, answering letters, and assisting with mailings.
We encourage people with a relevant Masters degree to apply.
In some cases, applicants with an undergraduate degree (with
relevant experience) will be considered. Interns should have
excellent research, writing, editing, networking, and organizational
skills. Familiarity with computers is required (we primarily
use MS Office). Interns are asked to work at least 20 hours
per week so that they can establish a sense of continuity
and undertake substantive assignments.
Applications Deadlines:
BASIC's internship program has a continuous application process.
Applications are considered as and when a place becomes vacant.
Applicants are therefore asked to state within their cover
letters the dates they would be available, and to send their
applications well in advance.
Visas/Work Permits
The requirements for visas and work permits depend on
the citizenship of the applicant. Non-US nationals are
required to contact the American Embassy in their country
of citizenship, to learn what the visa requirements are before
applying and ensuring they are eligible. Unfortunately
BASIC is unable to assist applicants to gain visas or permits.
