INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
LONDON

Current Vacancies:

There are no vacancies at present

Job Description

BASIC's London office supervises up to two unpaid interns at any time. Through their work interns gain an understanding of many of the current issues affecting European and transatlantic security; familiarity with the arms control community in London and Europe; an understanding of employment opportunities in the field; a first-hand view of how a small think tank influences international media coverage and UK policy formulation; and exposure to the challenges and responsibilities of international networking.

Interns will have the opportunity to participate in these projects in various ways; such as helping to research a fact sheet or report, assisting in the organisation of conferences and events, or preparing regular news Updates. Interns are also expected to attend Parliamentary hearings and briefings, monitor arms control meetings, monitor news web sites and various administrative tasks as required.

We encourage people with a relevant Masters degree to apply. In some cases, a first degree with relevant experience will be considered. Interns should have excellent research, writing, editing, networking, and organisational skills. Familiarity with MS Office is required, as well as an ability to use the Internet. Interns are asked to work a minimum of three days per week and to make a commitment of at least 3 months, so that they can establish a sense of continuity and undertake substantive assignments. Longer internships are possible upon arrangement.

Applications Deadlines:
BASIC's internship program has a continuous application process. Applications are considered as and when a place becomes vacant. Applicants are therefore asked to state the dates they would be available in their covering letter, and to send their applications in well in advance.

Visas/Work Permits
The requirements for visas and work permits depend on the citizenship of the applicant. Non-European Union nationals are required to contact the British Consulate in their country of citizenship, to learn what the visa requirements are before applying and ensuring they are eligible. Unfortunately BASIC is unable to assist applicants to gain visas or permits.

How to Apply
Please submit the following application materials:

  • A cover letter, including:
    • what dates you are available between
    • the reasons why you are interested in working at BASIC
    • how many days a week you wish to work
  • Your CV/resume
  • A recent writing sample (1500-2000 words)
  • Two academic references from former or current professors and/or employers

Please email your application materials to: basicuk@basicint.org
