INTERNSHIP
PROGRAM
LONDON
Job Description
The BASIC London office supervises up to two unpaid interns
at any time. Through their work, interns gain an understanding
of many of the current issues affecting European security;
familiarity with the arms control community in London and
Europe and various employment opportunities in the field;
a first-hand view of how a small think tank influences international
media coverage; and exposure to the challenges and responsibilities
of international networking.
Interns will have the opportunity
to participate in these projects in various ways, such as
helping to research a fact sheet or report, assisting in the
organisation of a speaking tour, or preparing monthly informational
mailings American and European readers. Interns will assume
various programmatic and administrative duties associated
with the organisation's activities. Interns are also expected
to perform work of a general nature: attending Parliamentary
hearings and briefings, monitoring arms control, attending
meetings of the UK Small Arms Working Group, monitoring newspapers,
answering letters, and assisting with mailings.
We encourage people with a relevant Masters degree to apply.
In some cases, a first degree (with relevant experience) will
be considered. Interns should have excellent research, writing,
editing, networking, and organisational skills. Familiarity
with computers is required (we primarily use MS Office), as
well as an ability to use the Internet. Interns are asked
to work at least four days per week so that they can establish
a sense of continuity and undertake substantive assignments.
It is preferable if interns are able to make a commitment
of at least 3-4 months. Longer internships are possible upon
arrangement.
Applications Deadlines:
BASIC's internship program has a continuous application process.
Applications are considered as and when a place becomes vacant.
Applicants are therefore asked to state the dates they would
be available in their covering letter, and to send their applications
in well in advance.
Visas/Work Permits
The requirements for visas and work permits depend on
the citizenship of the applicant. Non-European Union
nationals are required to contact the British Consulate in
their country of citizenship, to learn what the visa requirements
are before applying and ensuring they are eligible.
Unfortunately BASIC is unable to assist applicants to gain
visas or permits.
