Conflict Prevention and Crisis Management
In this section:
The shaky responses of the international community to the
crises in the former Yugoslavia and the weak response to ethnic
conflict in Africa have had devastating results but have also
led to a considerable amount of self-reflection within international
organizations about their inability to prevent and contain
violent conflict. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have only
added fuel to these debates.
Ways to foster conciliation before conflicts turn violent
and to ensure law and order and respect for individual rights
are at a premium along with longer-range economic reform and
reconstruction programs. The principles of self-determination
and tolerance are often at war with one another in this latter-day
nation-building process, and often with explosive results.
BASIC has published a wide range of articles on the efforts
of NATO, the EU, the OSCE, and the United Nations to develop
conflict prevention and crisis management, including peace
operations. Below are also links to other organizations and
resources that are relevant to conflict prevention and crisis
management.
