Lead by the US, NATO is increasing its focus on the proliferation
of and potential threat from weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
Pulling back from early proposals for an aggressive, military-focused
counter-proliferation effort, the US is now seeking enhanced
intelligence gathering and information sharing among Allies
on WMD issues. This approach has broad support in NATO; whether
this effort will lead to broader counter-proliferation initiatives
remains to be seen.
This page will include updates on the WMD proposal as well
as a link to the chapter on this topic from BASIC's Risk
Reduction Strategy for NATO.
