Austria to Deny Tank Pass-Through
for PfP Exercise

Georg Schoefbaenker, University of Lindz, Austria

24 February 1999

Austria is likely to forbid the transport of Hungarian tanks over Austrian territory for a PfP mission scheduled March 8, in the region of Friuli, Italy. Ten days ago, NATO-Brussels Headquarters officially asked the office of the Federal Chancellor whether Hungarian and Czech troops might pass over Austrian territory for that mission.

Austria' s Department of Interior and Office of the Federal Chancellor, which will make the final decision, do not want to grant transport permission, although the Foreign and Defense Departments showed support for allowing the pass-through.
