US Denies Global Role for NATO
16 March 1999
By Tasos Kokkinides
In a speech to the Royal United Services Institute
in London on March 8, General Henry H. Shelton, chairman of
the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, insisted that the US does
not lobby for a global role for NATO. General Shelton said:
"Some cynics speculate that America seeks to
shift NATO toward some kind of global role. Let me say that,
while Alliance security must surely consider the global context,
NATO is unquestionably a Euro-Atlantic organization for Euro-Atlantic
threats, not a global one for global threats. Within this
context of collective security against common threats, we
must be bold as we continue the process of transforming NATO".
